On the corner of Hawke and Bowen Street, opposite the beachside White Sands Park on Jervis Bay is Kanpai Japanese Restaurant. Stacked stone walls, cherry blossom panels and polished wood combine in a traditional Japanese setting full of subtle, modern twists. Well known from Sydney’s hatted Yoshii, Yoshi Tanimo is behind the menu, boasting a fusion of Japanese creations with Western flavours which attract foodies from as far as Wollongong. Kicking back in the outdoor bar and grill area, diners delve into house-made gyoza dumplings to start, before sticky barbeque miso short ribs with greens, or perhaps teriyaki grilled eye fillet accompanied by greens and pickles. To cap it all off, a Naughty Nashi chocolate mousse with sable biscuit, berry coulis and vanilla poached pear does the trick.
